REPORT HAS DIAMONDBACKS IN NL WEST WITH DEVIL RAYS IN AL

The Diamondbacks will be members of the NL West and the
Devil Rays will begin play in the AL, sources tell Tracy
Ringolsby of the ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS. Splitting the teams will
take the pressure off MLB to expand in order to avoid having 16
teams in one league and 14 in the other. Both league will now
have 15 teams. The AL will benefit from increased exposure in
the Southeastern U.S., where the NL "has a lock." It would also
help MLB's two FL teams cross-market by offering "slightly
different products." Placing Tampa in the AL East would mean the
Tigers to the Central and K.C. to the West, thus giving the
Rangers a "divisional rival in the same time zone" (ROCKY
MOUNTAIN NEWS, 7/28).
