SUN DEVIL FACELIFT PONDERED FOR SUPER BOWL 2000

Due to the fast-approaching bid deadline for the Super Bowl
in 2000, Arizona State is studying an estimated $20M-$75M
improvement to Sun Devil Stadium, as suggested by the NFL,
according to the ARIZONA REPUBLIC. Though there is currently no
funding for the project, ASU's College of Architecture is
examining ways to expand the concourses on all three levels to
allow new restrooms and concession stands alleviating long lines
at Super Bowl XXX. Jim Steeg, NFL Dir of Special Events, said
"he liked the sound" of the proposed changes but didn't know how
they would help the Valley's competition with Atlanta, Los
Angeles, Miami and Tampa for the 2000 game. Cardinals Owner Bill
Bidwill refused to comment, but the REPUBLIC notes if Bidwill
"likes what he sees, a revamped Sun Devil Stadium may eliminate
the desire" for a dome (Chris Moeser, ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 7/20).
