CHAIRMAN FOR LIFE? IOC COULD ENDORSE SAMARANCH EXTENSION

IOC members "could be set to endorse" Juan Antonio Samaranch
as President into the next century, according to this morning's
CHICAGO TRIBUNE. Although Samaranch's latest term does not
expire until September '97, "there is strong speculation" that
the IOC session will move today (his 67th birthday) to ask him
for a fourth term. The IOC will also hold elections for other
offices, with Dick Pound of Canada facing India's Ashwini Kumar
for VP. Germany's Thomas Bach, Guatemala's Willi Kaltschmitt
Lujan, Japan's Chiharu Igaya and Peru's Ivan Dibos are seeking
the two vacant spots on the Executive Board. With the IOC
membership at 104, there was talk of a two-tier system (CHICAGO
TRIBUNE, 7/17).
