LEAGUE NOTES

     As a result of the Southern Hockey League's demise, the team
from Hunstville and expansion teams from Macon, GA and Columbus,
GA will likely join the CHL for the upcoming season (SAN ANTONIO
EXPRESS-NEWS, 7/16)....Three members of the Avalanche, including
goaltender Patrick Roy, were among the 24 players the NHL said
were eligible for salary arbitration (N.Y. TIMES, 7/17)....Magic
Johnson helped promote New York's inaugural Mayor's Cup
Basketball Tournament beginning August 11, New York's first
structured city-wide league (N.Y. POST, 7/17)....The Arena
Football League will break one million fans in the regular season
for the first time in league history this year (AFL)....In
Boston, Frank Dell'Apa questions whether MLS has helped or
hindered U.S. National team progress (BOSTON GLOBE, 7/16).
....Despite a feeling that the CFL is in its "best shape in five
years," Perry Lefko of the TORONTO SUN reports "growing concern"
about the Ottawa Rough Riders, B.C. Lions and Montreal Alouettes.
Meanwhile, the future of Commissioner Larry Smith was only dealt
with in a cursory manner at a CFL Board of Governors meeting
Monday (TORONTO SUN, 7/16).
