NFLPA HAS LAWYERS AND MONEY, VOWS TO FIGHT GUNS

In response to several gun-related incidents involving NFL
players in the offseason, the NFLPA and the league "have been
talking specifically about ways to crack down on players who
carry guns," according to a report on ESPN's "SportsCenter."
NFLPA Exec Dir Gene Upshaw: "Anywhere the club is, firearms will
be prohibited. That includes planes, that includes cars, that
includes dormitories, hotels that the clubs might be traveling
through." According to ESPN's Sal Paolantonio, Upshaw met with
NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and the league's new security
chief recently to "iron out the new policies." Paolantonio:
"Violators could face stiff fines and Upshaw says he is worried
about some resistance from the NRA. Plus, the NFL will have to
comply with laws in some states which allow citizens to carry
concealed weapons." Paolantonio notes several teams are looking
to hire former police officers to "beef up security" for
training camp next month ("SportsCenter," ESPN, 6/24).
