BRONCOS BEGIN PUBLIC RELATIONS EFFORT TO HELP STADIUM EFFORT

The Broncos have begun a campaign to win taxpayer approval
for a new $250M stadium by focusing on the team's and Owner Pat
Bowlen's support for the community, according to Michele Conklin
of the ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS. Denver-area residents have received
fliers emphasizing the money the team has given to local
organizations and "pitching" the opportunity to be placed on the
Broncos' season ticket waiting list. Rosemary Hanratty, Broncos
Dir of Marketing, said "For 37 years the franchise has been
giving dollars back to the community, but people didn't
understand what we were doing because we've never had to
advertise." So far this year, the team has raised about $1M, 60%
of which comes through a matching grant by the McCormick Tribune
Foundation, for a number of Denver charities (ROCKY MOUNTAIN
NEWS, 6/20). A public referendum on whether to raise sales taxes
by 0.1% to help pay for the proposed facility will not take place
until November '97 (THE DAILY).
