NBC AND AFFILS PONDER A SWAP OF OLYMPIC AD SLOTS

NBC and its affiliates are considering a proposal to "swap
inventory" valued at $275M that represents the affiliates'
contribution toward payment for the '96, 2000 and 2002 Olympic
Games, according to the latest issue of BROADCASTING & CABLE. If
approved, the deal would give affiliates -- "for the first time"
-- a cut of NBC's profits from the Games, according to Ken
Elkins, Chair of the NBC Affiliates Advisory Board. The swap,
which would supersede an earlier trade worth $65M for Atlanta
alone, would give the network more time during the morning (7-
9am) and late night (11:30pm-2am), with the affiliates getting
more spots in prime time. One difference between the '96 deal
and this new arrangement is no exclusivity guarantee to the
affiliates, raising questions surrounding cable coverage in 2000
and 2002 (Steve McClellan, BROADCASTING & CABLE, 5/20).
