LEAGUE NOTES

     CNN's "Moneyline" examined the early success of MLS and what
it termed the "surprisingly strong rebirth" of pro soccer in the
U.S.  CNN's Casey Wian reviewed the league's TV and sponsorship
deals, noting that ESPN2's ratings thus far are higher than those
of its average college basketball games (CNN, 5/21)....ESPN's
Peter Gammons reports Indians officials believe Albert Belle will
"go along with" the AL's demand he undergo counseling -- and that
Belle understands the consequences of noncompliance
("SportsCenter," 5/21).... In San Jose, Mark Purdy compares the
NBA and NHL playoffs:  "Hockey is once more beating the baggy
pants off basketball.  It's not even close .... The hoop guys
probably don't care that the puck guys might be gaining on them.
The hoops guys should" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 5/22).
