earthquake yesterday afternoon. The game was not delayed and no
damage was reported (S.F. CHRONICLE, 5/22)....Peter Gammons
reported on the "campaign" by Padres GM Kevin Towers to make the
Pads MLB's baseball's first tobacco-free team. Towers, who gave
up his chewing habit in March, has convinced all but two players
to quit ("SportsCenter," ESPN, 5/21)....Vikings VP/Marketing Stu
Widdess said over the last two years, eleven regular-season home
games would have been blacked out if TV stations and sponsors had
not bought discounted tickets. Widdess, noting the practice will
not continue this year: "We have to find out if this community
will support the Vikings" (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 5/21).
...."Joe Vision" will give fans a chance to watch Red Wings away
games at Joe Louis Arena for a $5 admission fee complete with a
pre-game laser show (DETROIT NEWS, 5/22).... About 16 banners
were seen at Riverfront Stadium in support of Reds Owner Marge
Schott last night. A local talk radio host had offered $700 for
the best sign (Baltimore SUN, 5/22)....While the CHICAGO
TRIBUNE's Sam Smith writes now is the right time to sell the
Bulls, Owner Jerry Reinsdorf said selling would be "the right
business decision and it's logical. But I'm at the stage in my
life where it doesn't have to make sense" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE,
5/22).
