"Staggering paperwork" will again delay the sale of the
Mavericks into next week, but a blueprint of Ross Perot, Jr.'s
administration has emerged, according to Richie Witt of the FORT
WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM. A source close to the new owners said the
sale had been granted preliminary approval by the NBA and that
current head coach Dick Motta will be offered a job as a
consultant and the team will consider Laker GM Mitch Kupchak for
a front office position. The source also says that Perot will
begin to make room for 1 or 2% purchases of the team by Roger
Staubach and golfer Fred Couples. The team has reportedly been
"receiving phone calls from all kinds of celebrities ... who
would do the franchise a world of good just by sitting in the
front row at games" (FORT WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 4/25). In SI's
"Point After," Steve Rushin does his best Ross Perot
impersonation to explain how son Junior will govern the
Mavericks. Rushin (AKA Perot) writes that the team's problem is
the same as "what's wrong with the two-party system of the
American government. It's got no center, see" (SI, 4/29).
