CARTER WANTS TO KEEP MINORITY INTEREST SHOULD HE SELL MAVS

Mavs Owner Donald Carter said no favorite has emerged in
current negotiations on the sale of his team, "but if and when he
does sell, Carter plans to keep part." Carter said he plans to
keep anywhere between 10% and 30%. If a new owner (or owners)
gains controlling interest, sources close to negotiations say
"several stipulations will be attached." First, a "heavy
penalty" would discourage relocation, and new ownership would be
obligated "to at least interview -- and strongly consider"
several of the team's top front-office personnel. They would
also be "strongly encouraged to offer" up to 20% in a public
stock offering. Carter said the CISL Sidekicks are not a part of
any Mavs sale. Despite previous reports, former Cowboys QB Roger
Staubach said he is not part of any group, but added if he were
to be involved it would be strictly as a "passive partner" (Brad
Townsend, DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 4/11). This morning's FT. WORTH
STAR-TELEGRAM has a group of Ross Perot Jr., David McDavid and
possibly Staubach emerging as the "front-runner" (Whitt & Fisher,
FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 4/11). Carter hinted in a Tuesday
speech he may sell the team because he doesn't want to move into
a new arena where alcohol would be sold. Carter is a devout
Baptist (AP/N.Y. POST, 4/11).
