Facilities Venues

STADIUM NOTES

This week's Charlotte BUSINESS JOURNAL profiles the design
of the new Carolinas Stadium. The HOK-designed facility is seen
by architects as "possibly the only structure in Charlotte that
will stand as a symbol of late 1990s architecture for many years
to come." The stadium will have three 80-foot entryways
surrounded by 7'x 17' sculpted panthers (Charlotte BUSINESS
JOURNAL, 3/25).... Under scrutiny for food handling violations at
the Kingdome, Ogden Entertainment Services vowed to "meet or
exceed" standards by MLB's opening day (Tacoma NEWS TRIBUNE,
3/26)....While TBS still prefers a new arena on the site of the
Omni, local officials and the Omni's designer back another site
across from the arena. Replacing the Omni would mean at least
two seasons for the Hawks at Georgia Tech or the Georgia Dome
(ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 3/27).... Phillies President Bill Giles,
on the prospects of a new ballpark: "I'm afraid in the
millennium year, we'll still be in the Vet. I can see the final
touches being made on a baseball-only stadium. I certainly hope
it will be under way by then but I don't think it will be
finished" (Bill Conlin, PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 3/27).
