LONG LIVE THE ABA! NBA REVENUES GO TO SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS

The St. Louis Spirit, the former ABA franchise, still
receives "about" 40% of what an NBA team gets in national TV
revenue as payment for not joining the league when the leagues
merged 20 years ago. That comes to about $4M a year from rights
deals with Turner Sports and NBC. Reportedly, a one-time cash
payment was offered, but rejected. Donald Schupak, who
negotiated the deal for Spirit principal owners, Ozzie and Danile
Silna, said there have been NBA "overtures" to buy out the
Spirit, but their asking price has not been met (Richard
Sandomir, N.Y. TIMES, 2/23).
