RETAIL NEWS: NO MERGER FOR HERMAN'S

     Hopes from suppliers that Herman's Sporting Goods is
pursuing a merger "were dashed" yesterday when it was learned
that the company is having no talks.  The N.Y. POST.  notes there
had been speculation Herman's would merge with chains Gart
Sports, MC Sport and Big 5 Corp., but a source close to the
company said Herman's is not pursuing any mergers now (Cynthia
Vespereny, N.Y. POST, 2/14)....New Sports & Recreation Inc. Chair
and CEO Stephen Bebis is profiled in this morning's TAMPA
TRIBUNE.  Lisa Backman writes Bebis is "hoping to do for Sports &
Recreation what he did for Home Depot:  Corner the market" (TAMPA
TRIBUNE, 2/14).  Sports & Recreation's stock closed Tuesday at
$5.75/share, up $.25 (ST. PETE TIMES, 2/14).
