NASCAR BENEFITTING FROM INDY-CAR STRIFE?

"With sold-out venues and TV numbers that never have been
more impressive, NASCAR appears to have its act together," writes
Beth Tuschak in USA TODAY. She notes that while the IndyCar
season is "guaranteed to be filled with strife and conflict,"
NASCAR "has never been more at ease with itself." CBS has
increased its NASCAR coverage to 13 races this year and ESPN's
NASCAR rating were up 22% last year. Attendance also is going
up. In 31 races last year, NASCAR's Winston Cup series set an
attendance record with a total of 5,326,721 fans (USA TODAY,
2/14).
INDY CAR UPDATE: The WASHINGTON POST profiles IRL founder
Tony George. Asked about his motive for dividing the IndyCar
circuit by creating the IRL, George said there was a fork in the
road and he took the path that led back to the "heart" of
American racing. George said he has had discussion with CART
officials, who plan to hold the U.S. 500 in Michigan opposite the
Indy 500 adding, "Some type of accommodation is not out of the
question at this point." But CART's Pat Patrick notes, "There's
nothing I would like more than to see a resolution, but I'm
afraid it's too late now for us to go back" (WASHINGTON POST,
2/14).
OWNERSHIP NEWS: Indy Car Owner Chip Ganassi is a minority

a minority owner in Bobby Rahal's IndyCar team (Steve Ballard,
