THE BROWNS: ESPN's Sal Paolantonio reported that NFL
Commissioner Paul Tagliabue is negotiating with Cleveland Mayor
Mike White to secure a deal before next month's league meetings
in Chicago. Paolantonio: "The deal, according to league
sources, would allow Art Modell to move to Baltimore, but
Cleveland would keep the Browns name and logo and build a new
stadium for a new franchise" ("SportsCenter," 1/26). JERRY
JONES: Tagliabue was asked about the lawsuits between the league
and Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones during an appearance on ABC's "This
Week with David Brinkley." Tagliabue: "Jerry Jones dishonors
the agreement he made when he came into the NFL partnership. He
takes what does not belong to him. The NFL is what we sell. It
belongs to the 30 teams, not the Dallas Cowboys" (ABC, 1/28). In
an interview with the DALLAS MORNING NEWS, Tagliabue expanded on
his position, noting Jones' attempts to have Pepsi coolers placed
at the Cowboys' Super Bowl training site. Tagliabue: "What does
the official drink of Texas Stadium have to do with a Super Bowl
training facility in Arizona during Super Bowl week? ... This
league didn't start in 1989 when Jones bought the Cowboys"
(Richard Alm, DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 1/29). The AP called the
comments a "blistering attack" (WASHINGTON POST, 1/29).
