MARKETPLACE ROUND-UP

     As part of its marketing deal with the NHL, 7-Eleven is
introducing a new Slurpee flavor called Peach Puck.  7-Eleven
also plans to run a promotional tie-in with the NCAA men's
basketball tournament.  The "Power Play" promotion with the NHL
will run through March 31 (Langdon Brockinton, INSIDE MEDIA, 1/24
issue)....Food Lion and Pepsi are teaming in a promotion to send
a fan to the ACC Tournament and NCAA Tournament (The Championship
Group)....TIME's Steve Wulf profiles the impact of snowboarding
on North American ski resorts.  Some resort owners predict that
by 2005, half of their customers could be snowboarders (TIME,
1/29)....ISI has added Indy car driver Lyn St. James to its
client roster and takes credit for St. James' recent sponsorship
deal with the Lifetime TV network (ISI)....Royal Crown's new
citrus soft drink, "Kick," is taking on PepsiCo's Mountain Dew
with the slogan, "Your Little Sister Drinks Mountain Dew."  Pepsi
has threatened to sue (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 1/24)....Walt Disney
Co. reported new highs in theme park attendance and merchandise
sales for the first quarter ended December 31.  Profits rose 3%
to $496M (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 1/24)....The NHL hopes to roll out
Third Jerseys for more teams in '96-97, but they are not saying
which ones (TORONTO STAR, 1/24).

On this week’s pod, SBJ’s Austin Karp has two Big Get interviews. The first is with TNT’s Stan Van Gundy as he breaks down the NBA Playoffs from the booth. Later in the show, we hear from ESPN’s VP of Programming and Acquisitions Tim Reed as the NFL Draft gets set to kick off on Thursday night in Motown. SBJ’s Tom Friend also joins the show to share his insights into NBA viewership trends.
