CBS TO HEAR MORE PROTEST OVER BEN WRIGHT

The National Organization for Women and the Gay & Lesbian
Alliance will hold a protest in New York today against CBS golf
commentator Ben Wright over remarks he allegedly made last May
about lesbianism on the LPGA Tour. The groups will call for a
viewer boycott of CBS if Wright isn't "reprimanded" (Michael
Hiestand, USA TODAY, 12/14). A current GOLFWEEK editorial calls
on CBS to cut ties with Wright: "If CBS is truly committed to
excellence in golf coverage, it will prepare a generous severance
package for Mr. Wright" (GOLFWEEK, 12/9 issue). In his media
column, GOLFWEEK's Dave Shedloski speaks with Dan Jenkins, who
was quoted in the latest SI piece that claimed Wright admitted
making the disparaging comments about women last May at the
McDonald's LPGA Championships. Jenkins says SI took his quotes
out of context, adding, "They misquoted me. They took out all
the humor ... They attached an importance to it that wasn't
warranted. They had their own agenda, in my opinion." SI
Managing Editor Mark Mulvoy said the magazine "totally and
unequivocally stands by the accuracy of the reporting of the
story" (GOLFWEEK, 12/9 issue).
