SNAGS IN DISNEY'S PURCHASE OF CONTROLLING INTEREST IN ANGELS

Disney's purchase of 25% interest in the Angels is still
expected to be approved at a January 16-18 MLB owners' meeting in
L.A., but several factors have slowed the process, according to
the L.A. TIMES. Disney's merger with Cap Cities/ABC has promoted
concern from some owners over possible conflicts n light of
baseball's new TV contract with NBC, Fox, Liberty and ESPN. Some
owners are also concerned about Disney's plans to build its own
cruise ships and its ties to on-board casinos and gambling. And
finally, Disney's involvement in so many enterprises has slowed
the paperwork. Ross Newhan notes some think Disney may have been
stalling while the Angels, Rams and the city of Anaheim worked
out stadium renovation issues (L.A. TIMES, 12/10). OTHER SALE
NEWS: Kevin McClatchy and his bid to purchase the Pirates is
profiled in BUSINESS WEEK. Stephen Baker notes that the
newspaper heir may have "saved major-league ball in Pittsburgh"
(BUSINESS WEEK, 12/18 issue).
