NAMES IN THE NEWS

     PGA Tour pros STEVE ELKINGTON, COREY PAVIN, FRED COUPLES,
and JEFF MAGGERT will all have parts in KEVIN COSTNER's upcoming
film "Tin Cup," but PETER JACOBSEN, who has a speaking part in
the film, will be the fictional winner of the U.S. Open -- his
first major (GOLFWEEK, 11/18 issue)....Magic Owner RICH DEVOS, on
re-sign SHAQUILLE O'NEAL:  "Shaq is a  reasonable man, so we'll
ask: 'Do you want to be a one-man show, or do you want to have
guys you can throw the ball to?'" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 11/19)....T-
Wolves VP KEVIN MCHALE was hunting last weekend, along with an
ESPN camera crew.  His exploits will be featured in a future
outdoors show on the network (Minneapolis STAR-TRIBUNE,
11/19)....At the going-away party for former Orioles GM ROLAND
HEMOND, Asst GM FRANK ROBINSON roasted his old boss, and at the
end, added, "Seriously, I love you."  Hemond responded with,
"Well, that's nice, Frank, but you still can't have my Bud Light"
-- thus breaking up the room (Baltimore SUN, 11/19)....Bullets/
Capitals Owner ABE POLLIN was named Business Leader of the Year
by the DC Chamber of Commerce for his efforts to get the new MCI
Center built (WASHINGTON POST, 11/20)....David Letterman on the
mistrial in the DON KING case: "If it's any consolation to
prosecutors, you know, Don already looks like he's been to the
electric chair" ("Late Show," CBS, 11/20).
