TCI REPORTS PROFITS RISE WHILE CABLE TAKES A LOSS

TCI Inc. said third quarter profit rose 44%, but the
company's cable division had a loss on "higher interest costs and
noncash expenses, despite strong cash flow and revenues." For
the three months, TCI posted net income of $36M, compared with
$25M last year. The TCI Communications cable unit had a loss of
$26M compared with a net income of $23M a year earlier. The
company said increases in expenses as well as interest expense
"associated with new debt, hurt results." The results were "in
line with analysts' expectations" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 11/15).
