STADIUM AND ARENA NOTES

Plans to build the Pepsi Center in Denver have been delayed
one year, which is attributed to developer Philip Anschutz's
pull-out of a partnership with Comsat, owners of the Nuggets and
Avalanche (WASHINGTON TIMES, 9/29). Officials from Anschutz
Corp., which owns the former railyard on which the arena was to
be built, said Comsat "reneged" on a deal to sell Anschutz 50% of
the Avalanche. Anschutz and his partners recently announced
plans to buy the L.A. Kings (AD AGE ONLINE, 9/28)....The Bears
met with business leaders in northwest Indiana yesterday
regarding a possible move. Both sides agree "progress had been
made" and that they had narrowed the focus to a "specific site."
Although neither would say where, it is believed to be just north
of Gary Municipal Airport (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 9/29).
....Officials from the Red Sox and Patriots yesterday received a
"tough grilling" in the second day of Megaplex hearings. The
House Ways and Means Committee questioned "just how generous the
teams' offers really are" (BOSTON GLOBE, 9/29)....In San Jose,
Mark Purdy reports that the city's chances of landing the
Warriors today "look far better" than Oakland's chances of re-
landing the Raiders did six months ago (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS,
9/29)....HOK is being sued for $8M by the IL Sports Facilities
Authority over alleged "design flaws" in Comiskey Park. ISFA
claims that the company is responsible for cracks in the concrete
concourses (CRAIN'S CHICAGO, 9/25 issue)....In Tampa, local
officials said "they don't know how to pay for the rest" of the
Bucs' proposed new stadium. After Bucs Owner Malcolm Glazer's
estimated annual contribution of $6.5-7.5M, public funds still
fall short by an estimated $3-4M a year (ST. PETE TIMES,
9/29)....Hornets Owner George Shinn has said he will not make
season ticket holders buy PSL's to finance a new privately owned
arena (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 9/29)....The Rams have made a "formal
request" to the 49ers to swap home dates to "buy more time for
construction crews racing to finish" the Trans World Dome. But
the 49ers say that is "totally unacceptable" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE,
9/29)....The Ontario government "appears to have the Raptors by
their basketballs," according to this morning's TORONTO SUN. The
team will have to pay a $1M penalty for failing to meet a
deadline of October 1 to begin construction of the Air Canada
Centre. The money will go the team's charitable foundation
(TORONTO SUN, 9/29).
