  • NCAA NEWS AND NOTES: CONFERENCE USA LINKS WITH LIBERTY BOWL

         Conference USA has announced a deal with the St. Jude
    Liberty Bowl, in which C-USA and the Big East will send teams to
    the bowl starting December 31, 1996.  The game will be televised
    on ESPN, which signed a three-year initial contract with a
    renewal option.  A fourth Big East team will play the C-USA
    Champion (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 9/21).
         D-DAY FOR BIG 12 SITE SOON: A decision on where the Big 12
    Conference will hold their championship football games could be
    made within two to four weeks.  Big 12 AD's are awaiting more
    information "regarding the financial guarantees offered."
    Irving, San Antonio, Houston, St. Louis and Kansas City are the
    five cities that have bid on the game (FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM,
    9/21).  The Big 12 hopes to kick off its first season on August
    12, with Kansas State-Texas A&M.  Big 12 Commissioner Steve
    Hatchell said ABC has asked the league start its package with a
    conference game (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 9/20).
