OILERS SETTLE; WILL STAY THROUGH '97, FREE TO LEAVE IN '98

The Oilers agreed to settle the team's lawsuit against
Harris County, the City of Houston and Astrodome USA Wednesday
night, and will remain at the Astrodome through the end of the
team's lease in '97. However, John Williams reports in this
morning's HOUSTON CHRONICLE that the settlement also includes a
promise by local officials not to interfere with negotiations
with Nashville or other cities interested in luring the team and
allows Oilers Owner Bud Adams to move the team in '98. Also in
the settlement, if the team fails to strike a deal with Nashville
by the time that city's exclusive negotiating contract with the
team ends October 20, Adams agreed to negotiate with Houston for
six months. Oilers' officials are expected to travel to
Nashville next week to present an offer to officials there
(HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 9/14).
