MR. DEBARTOLO, YOUR PLANE TO DALLAS IS NOW BOARDING

Eddie DeBartolo Jr. met the press yesterday and spoke out
against Cowboys' Owner Jerry Jones' move "to take more money out
of the communal pot from which all NFL teams have shared."
Responding to Jones' Pepsi deal and his assault on NFL
Properties, DeBartolo said, "If we let the mavericks go on out on
their own they'll destroy the league. .... Is (Jones' deal) going
to be a temporary fix like a drug addict shooting up heroin,
where you know you're going to die one of these days? Down the
road the league will die." In San Francisco, Gary Swan writes,
"League unity talk is a somewhat new tact for DeBartolo, who was
sipping from a Pepsi can as he spoke." The 49ers owner has had
"his own run-ins with the NFL" in the past (S.F. CHRONICLE,
8/23).
