RAIDERS PSL SALES FAR FROM SELLOUT -- COUNTY MAY PICK UP TAB

More than 10,000 season tickets remain unsold for the
Raiders return to Oakland, "raising the threat that taxpayers
will help bear the burden for the team's return," according to
Barry Witt of the SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS. Witt notes that
according to figures released Friday night, the Oakland Football
Marketing Association has sold slightly more than 31,000 seats.
There are more than 45,375 PSLs available for this season, with
nearly 57,000 available for the '96 season. An anonymous Alameda
County official told the MERCURY NEWS: "It's pretty
frightening." Officials have extended the deadline for the
second payment on PSLs until today "in hopes that some buyers
that put down first deposits on about 8,000 PSLs last month, but
didn't make second payments, will come up with the additional
money." Payments for approximately 4,700 PSLs were disallowed
due to bounced checks or credit card rejections. Witt notes that
Oakland fans "face some of the highest base ticket prices in the
league" at $41-61 along with a $50-75 annual fee to keep their
PSLs valid. Officials say they must sell 80% of the 57,000
available PSLs for next season to avoid having to use taxpayer
dollars to pay off bonds for the $80M stadium expansion and $64M
in loans and cash advances. Marketing officials say they plan to
"launch an all-out advertizing blitz" this week and will launch a
direct mail campaign aimed at former L.A. season-ticket holders
(SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 8/19). The team has also been guaranteed
$3.8M from a preseason game against the Patriots to be held
Friday at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto (S.F. CHRONICLE, 8/19).
SATURATION? In Sunday's OAKLAND TRIBUNE, David Li examined
the "pro sports comeback" in Oakland. Li notes that a year ago,
the A's were in the process of being sold, the Warriors were
looking at San Francisco for a new arena and Raiders were in L.A.
Now, the Raiders have returned and the Warriors are planning a
new arena in Oakland -- both with the help of PSLs. While some
economists say the area's entertainment dollar may not be able to
support the growing cost of sports events, former A's and
Warriors Exec Andy Dolich says the East Bay market "has just
scratched the surface." Dolich: "This is a market that is
sophisticated when it comes to its entertainment and leisure
time. The sports here can be oversubscribed in the same way the
opera, the ballet and other arts are" (OAKLAND TRIBUNE, 8/20).
