SPIRIT OF MANITOBA MAKING FINAL PUSH TO RAISE FUNDS FOR JETS

As time runs out on efforts to save the Jets, the Spirit of
Manitoba will finally reveal its "game plan" for keeping the team
in Winnipeg today, according to the WINNIPEG FREE PRESS. John
Douglas and Paul Samyn write that Spirit of Manitoba will present
a "road map" for the "maze of deadlines and political heat" that
will encounter as fund-raising continues. Among the expected
announcements is the enlargement of the Spirit board of directors
to as many as 14 members. With C$62M pledged so far, the group
needs an additional C$18M by Aug. 15 (WINNIPEG FREE PRESS, 7/19).
ARENA OPPOSITION: More than 100 people attended a Winnipeg
town hall meeting last night, "hopping mad" over the use of
public funding for the proposed Jets arena deal (Wanda Chow,
WINNIPEG FREE PRESS, 7/19).
NASHVILLE JETS: A report from Minneapolis says that if the
Winnipeg deal falls apart, the NHL wants the club in Minneapolis,
but Nashville is ready and "will pay dearly" for the Jets (Sid
Hartman, Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 7/18).
