MCCLATCHY BID FOR PIRATES MAY COME WITHIN A WEEK
Published July 10, 1995
Newspaper heir Kevin McClatchy spent several days last week reviewing the Pirates' books and may make a preliminary bid for the Pirates within a week, the Associated Press reports. The bid would reportedly be similar to an $85.15M bid made by Adelphia Communications Chair John Rigas earlier this year. McClatchy's group's bid includes $30M from Liberty Media, owners of Pirate broadcaster KBL-Empire, as a down payment for Pirates TV rights for the next ten years (AP/Minneapolis STAR-TRIBUNE, 7/10).
