     Columnist GEORGE WILL has been named commissioner of the
Texas-Louisiana League. ESPN's PETER GAMMONS on Will's
appointment: "The Texas-Louisiana League now has something Major
League Baseball doesn't -- an independent commissioner"

management firm, 40-40 Sports Council, has closed its doors in
Miami Beach.  Canseco was officially informed by the MLBPA that
he could not be a player and an agent at the same time.  Canseco
did say he would represent himself in his next round of contract
negotiations (BOSTON GLOBE, 5/5)....Devil Rays Owner VINCE
NAIMOLI will not name the first team's GM until early July, after
MLB's June amateur draft (TAMPA TRIBUNE, 5/5)....49er JERRY RICE
will join NASCAR drivers KYLE PETTY, GEOFF BODINE and HARRY GANT
in a 3,100 mile motorcycle ride from San Francisco to Charlotte.

the Winston Cup Racing Wives Auxiliary and other charities (USA
TODAY, 5/5).... Sioux Falls Skyforce VP & GM GREG HEINEMAN was
named the '95 CBA Executive of the Year (USA TODAY, 5/5).
