BASEBALL UMPS NOT BETTING ON A CANADA-ONLY STRATEGY
MLBUA General Counsel Richie Phillips said the umpires' union "isn't counting heavily upon Ontario's anti-scab legislation to prvide the magic solution to bitter negotiations." Phillips said petitioning against the use of replacement umps in Toronto is part of their strategy, "but not a major part." Owners have locked out the umps, who are seeking a 53% payraise over a four-year contract, since January 1 (James Christie, Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 4/7).
