STREET HOCKEY PROMOTIONS: FOX, L.A. GEAR AND NIKE

Fox's Children's Network has created summer promotions with
Mattel and L.A. Gear that "dangle, respectively, a Chevrolet
Camaro filled with Hot Wheels toys and a one-on-one game of
street hockey" with Wayne Gretzky. On air spots begin running in
late May for the Mattel promo, with the grand prize awarded
Father's Day weekend. The June promo, "The Fox Kid's Great One
on One Sweepstakes," will pit a youngster against Gretzky in
street hockey (ADWEEK, 4/17).
COLLEGE STREET HOCKEY: The first-ever Nike "Power Play"
Street Hockey challenge was held this past weekend on the campus
of Cal/Berkeley in two inflatable street hockey rinks provided by
Nike. Nike donated all of the street hockey equipment to
Berkeley's intramural program, in an effort to encourage
participation and expand the sport on the campus. The Univ. of
TN-Knoxville also held a "Power Play" event this past weekend,
with Penn State hosting one this weekend (Nike). The Flyers
became the 13th NHL team to officially promote the Nike street
hockey program. The goal, according to the NHL, is to make
hockey "more accessible" for youth (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 4/23).
