RAINBOW COALITION TURNS FOCUS TO COLLEGIATE "FAIRNESS"
Rev. Jesse Jackson, President and Founder of the Rainbow Coalition, announced that the group will convene a National Rainbow Summit on Minority Concerns in Intercollegiate Athletics at Howard Univ. from June 23-24. The goal of the summit, as stated in a Rainbow release, "is to discuss and evaluate minority concerns in college sports and to develop specific recommendations and/or NCAA legislation to address those concerns which include not only minority hiring but also the impact of academic standards on minorities." The Rainbow Commission for Fairness in Athletics will also release its "Fairness Index," rating Division I schools on several factors, including the number of black athletes, graduation rate, and the number of blacks in coaching and administrative positions (Rainbow). Jackson: "There is a national attack on affirmative action and nowhere is there a more glaring disparity than in college sports" (Mark Asher, WASHINGTON POST, 4/19).
