STRIKING BASEBALL PLAYERS STILL HIT ON MADISON AVENUE

While baseball players are still on strike, Stuart stars
such as Jeff Bagwell, Will Clark, Ken Griffey Jr., Don Mattingly,
Cal Ripken Jr. and Frank Thomas "are still making amazing
catches, hitting towering home runs and playing as if every game
were the World Series" in the world of Madison Avenue, according
to Stuart Elliot of the N.Y. TIMES. For the most part,
advertisers of baseball-related products are "gamely running
their regular campaigns -- and hoping that somehow a settlement
will come soon." Reebok VP/Global Marketing Dan Hanrahan: "We
have an awful lot of product in the marketplace. Whether
baseball plays or doesn't play, kids still need shoes. Their
seasons haven't been called off" (N.Y. TIMES, 3/15).
"Entertainment Tonight" examined Griffey's new spot for Pepsi's
All-Sport. In the ad, he plays himself 49 years in the future
watching his grandson play a 21st Century version of baseball
("ET," 3/14).
