RUMORS CIRCULATE ABOUT LABATT TAKEOVER
Published February 27, 1995
"Takeover rumors continue to bubble around John Labatt Ltd.," according to the Toronto GLOBE & MAIL. Earlier this month, there were rumors that Danish brewer Carlsberg was buying Labatt stock with an eye toward a takeover. But the latest buzz has Onex Corp., specialists at leverage buyouts, interested in Labatt. Entertainment industry sources report talk that Onex might be interested in buying Labatt's entertainment and production operations alone -- which include interest in TSN, the Blue Jays and SkyDome. Labatt had been trying to spin off the entertainment assets into a public company, but those plans have "apparently been put on hold" (Matthew Ingram, Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 2/25).
