In an effort to narrow the number of stadium sites down to two or three, Fairfax County's Stadium Site Selection Task Force eliminated seven proposed sites, leaving six yet to be decided on. Sites that were eliminated include two in the western part of VA and two in the Tysons Corner (suburban DC) area. Criteria for choosing a stadium site include transportation, environmental, neighborhood, historic, and economic impacts (WASHINGTON TIMES, 1/4).
In Dallas last week, Mavericks owner Don Carter toured a proposed arena site in Lewisville and called it a "heck of a good alternative" to downtown Dallas. Carter, who was joined by Mavs coach Dick Motta as well as other city and county officials, said that although he was looking at the new site, he wasn't "giving up" on a new arena in Dallas (Kim North, DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 12/29)....According to reports last week in New Orleans, Saints owner Tom Benson says that the city could lose Super Bowl XXXI if $20.5M in renovations to the Superdome are not started early this year. Benson: "If we don't get started by April, we can't have the Superdome ready for the Super Bowl in 1997. That is our commitment to the NFL. We could work on temporary seating to keep the game, but that isn't part of the commitment that Gov. Edwards and I made to the NFL" (Brian Allee-Walsh, New Orleans TIMES-PICAYUNE, 12/29).
