COMMITTEE APPROVES MOVE OF ORANGE BOWL TO JOE ROBBIE
The Orange Bowl Committee voted to move the FedEx Orange Bowl to Joe Robbie Stadium. The annual event, which had been played for 60 years in downtown Miami, will move north after the '96 game. The "closed door meeting included an impassioned plea by Miami Mayor Steve Clark" to stay in the Orange Bowl. Clark threatened that a vote to move the game would result in the city "pulling all of its support of the Orange Bowl Festival" (Susan Miller Degnan, MIAMI HERALD, 10/12) In Miami, Greg Cote writes it was a "decision whether to remain a major bowl game in the national-championship mix, with all the attendant prestige and economic impact or not. ...The city of Miami lost. But South Florida won" (MIAMI HERALD, 10/12).
