EXECUTIVE TRANSACTIONS: EXITS AND ENTRANCES IN TEXAS

     DOUG MELVIN was named new Rangers GM.  Melvin had been
Assistant Orioles GM (Mult., 10/11).  Meanwhile, Rangers Dir of
Marketing MARTY CONWAY's resignation was announced.  Team
officials said Conway left for "personal reasons" (FORT WORTH
STAR-TELEGRAM, 10/7)....ED LYNCH has been named the Cubs' fourth
GM in eight years (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 10/10).... The Baseball
Network's VP of Sales JED PETRICK is now head of media sales for
Warner Brothers' new WP Television Network.  Petrick was at Fox
Sports before TBN....DDB Needham's New York and Chicago media
departments have consolidated under single management by PAGE
THOMPSON, the new U.S. Media Director at DDB Needham Worldwide,
New York (AD AGE, 10/10 issue)....DRT Industries Chair ROBERT
LEVY has been named Chair of the Philadelphia Sports Congress.
The Congress is part of the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors
Bureau and aims to attract sports events and sports-related
conventions (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 10/10)....Cox Enterprises has
named DAVID EASTERLY president and CEO (WALL STREET JOURNAL,
10/10)....Phillies GM LEE THOMAS is reported to be "lapping the
field" in the competition to become new Cardinals' GM.  Cardinals
President Mark Lamping spoke to Thomas by phone yesterday and
indicated another discussion will take place "probably today or
tomorrow" (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 10/11).
