     Dave Kindred profiles PAT GILLICK, who is retiring as Blue
Jays GM after 18 years.  Gillick plans to do some consulting work
for the Jays and work on a pet project -- attracting more
African-American young people to hockey.  Gillick, on sports in
20 years:  "We're seeing the end of the family-owned teams.
Ownerships will be corporate stuff" (THE SPORTING NEWS, 10/3
issue)....UNC basketball coach DEAN SMITH "sees no place" for
beer ads during college games and challenged the presidents of
ACC schools to do something about the issue (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER,
9/29)....NBC News highlighted the conflict between O.J. SIMPSON
merchandise and Simpson's attorneys who say the "marketing
infringes on trademark rights" secured shortly after the murders
("Nightly News," NBC, 9/29).  Proctor & Gamble is asking TV
networks not to air its ads if they plan to replace regular
daytime shows with coverage of the Simspon trial (PHILA.
INQUIRER, 9/30)....The suit against MARIO LEMIEUX brought by a
woman hit by an errant puck was dropped "hours before he was
supposed to testify" ("SportCenter," ESPN, 9/29).
