Published September 29, 1994
"Despite plenty of backroom mumbling from the NFL teams jilted by Deion Sanders," NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue approved the 49ers contract with the All-Pro cornerback. Tagliabue stated there was no evidence of Nike having any involvement in the deal. Tagliabue: "There is an absence of linkage with any such organization" (Len Pasquarelli, ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 9/29). Tagliabue admitted the NFL is "powerless to police sponsors if they act independently of clubs" (Clark Judge, SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 9/29)
