Goodell's Current Contract Extension With NFL Likely To Be His Last

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s five-year contract extension through March '24 likely will be his last one. NFL Exec VP/Communications Joe Lockhart at today's owners meeting in Irving, Texas, described the deal as 90% incentive-based. Those incentives will be decided by a host of owner committees. He also said that Goodell would have no post-retirement benefits, and access to purchase time at the NFL-negotiated rate on NetJets. Apparently referring to an ESPN report that Goodell wanted a jet for life, Lockhart said there has been “significant uninformed discussion about that” (Daniel Kaplan, Staff Writer).

Lockhart said Goodell “has been clear he views this as his final contract.” He added that Goodell will “work with owners of NFL teams to identify and have his successor in place by the time he plans to step away” (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 12/13).
