Source: NFL Commissioner Goodell Receives Contract Extension

The NFL compensation committee has informed all owners that a new contract for Commissioner Roger Goodell "has been executed," according to a source. The memo to owners cites the "existence of a 'nearly unanimous consensus' among owners in favor of finalizing the extension now" (PROFOOTBALLTALK.com, 12/6). The extension is reportedly for "another five years," ending a "stand off" with Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones over Goodell's leadership (TWITTER.com, 12/6).

Community College Leaders Look To Halt Ballpark Talks With A's

Trustees of the Peralta Community College District, which owns land where the A's hope to build a new ballpark, have "ordered the chancellor to stop plans with the team." The move "caught the A's by surprise." The team was aiming to build a "ballpark that could open" by '23. It is "unclear what the team’s next step will be." A’s President Dave Kaval has said that there "was no 'plan B' if the ballpark site near Laney College didn’t work out" (SFGATE.com, 12/6).

Meg Whitman Joins Republic FC Ownership As Club Eyes MLS

Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman has "rejoined the effort to bring an MLS expansion franchise to Sacramento." USL club Republic FC "not long after its presentation" at MLS HQ announced that Whitman "would join the ownership group." Whitman earlier this year was "said to be joining the ownership group." But in the last month, as Whitman announced she would step down at HP, club officials had said that "she had also chosen not to remain involved." It "wasn’t immediately clear Wednesday what changed." But observers in the last week have said that MLS "might want to see more to be convinced of a Sacramento team’s viability." Whitman "would seem to check that box" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 12/6).

ASM Agent Miller Loses NBPA Certification Amid Probe By FBI

ASM Sports President & Founder Andy Miller, one of the NBA's "most prominent player agents, has relinquished" his NBPA certification and "will no longer represent players in contract negotiations." Miller, who was representing NBAers including Raptors G Kyle Lowry, Knicks F Kristaps Porzingis and Raptors F Serge Ibaka, is "considered to be part of the FBI's probe into college basketball" (ESPN.com, 12/6).

USF Switching From Under Armour To Adidas In Eight-Year Deal

USF has "entered into an eight-year partnership with Adidas to provide footwear, apparel and accessories" to its varsity sports teams through the '25-26 season. USF's current deal with Under Armour "expires this year." The Adidas deal "affects 19 teams," and the school expects to "unveil new uniforms sometime this summer" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 12/6).

Meanwhile, Florida today officially became the fourth school to wear Jordan Brand. The deal covers UF's football team, as well as both men's and women's basketball squads. UF uniforms will begin featuring the Jumpman logo at the start of the '18-19 year (Florida).

Indians Plan To Extend Safety Netting At Progressive Field

The Indians today announced that they will "extend safety netting behind home plate at Progressive Field to the ends of both dugouts" for the '18 season. The team has "already begun alerting season ticket holders who will be affected by the change." Indians officials said that they "intend to employ the latest netting technology to minimize the intrusion on the live game experience at Progressive Field" (CLEVELAND.com, 12/6).

NCAA’s Mark Emmert: Basketball Reform Is "Most Important" Priority

After appearing on stage at the Learfield Intercollegiate Athletic Forum in New York, NCAA President Mark Emmert spoke with Exec Editor Abe Madkour about how the college community will address issues in men’s basketball that were brought to light by the FBI's investigation into the sport. Emmert said that reforming basketball before the start of the '18-19 season is his “single most important” priority.

Villanova's Wright: College Hoops One-And-Done Model Needs To Go

By Eric Fisher

Villanova men’s basketball coach Jay Wright today delivered a sharp rebuke of the sport’s one-and-done system for NBA-bound players. During an on-stage interview at the Learfield Intercollegiate Athletic Forum in N.Y., he called for a model more closely resembling baseball, where players enter the pro ranks either right after high school, after three years of college or when they reach 21 years of age. “There have to be student-athletes who want to be in college and want to be educated,” Wright said. “The ones that don’t, don’t put them in our system and don’t force them into our system. There’s so much out there now about student-athlete rights, and they should have rights. The problem is that there are athletes who don’t want to be students. To get a guy to a professional sport in seven months, that’s not why we’re here.”
