Pac-12 To Try Out Shorter Football Halftime, Reduced TV Breaks

Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott today announced that the conference will "shorten halftime and reduce the number of commercial breaks during its non-conference schedule this season as part of a trial program to reduce the length of its football games." Scott, speaking at the start of Pac-12 football media days, said that halftime will be 15 minutes long, down from 20, while the "number of commercial breaks will be reduced and they will be shorter in length." Scott noted that Pac-12 games have "averaged nearly" 3 hours, 30 minutes. The halftime reduction "could be a significant incentive" to keep TV viewers. Scott said that up to 30% of the audience is "lost during that break" (AP, 7/26).

Scott today also announced that the Pac-12 Football Championship Game will continue to be held at Levi's Stadium at least through '19. The new deal adds two years to the current agreement, with an option to extend through '20. The Pac-12 is headed into its fourth year hosting the game at neutral Levi's Stadium after three years of it being hosted on school campuses. The event carries presenting sponsorship from gas station chain 76 (Pac-12).
