Sports Attorney Raises Possibility Of Litigation Over Raiders' Move

Berg & Androphy sports attorney Jim Quinn today raised the possibility of ligation against the NFL during a rally in downtown Oakland designed to start the process of keeping pro football in the city. Several community groups last week hired Quinn and Weil, Gotshal & Manges attorney Eric Hochstadt to explore options to either stop the Raiders from relocating to Las Vegas or having football in some other capacity. Quinn, who said the NFL’s motive in moving the Raiders was to capture the relocation fee, said, “We will look at all legal options. There may be some legal claims that can be asserted.”

Quinn concluded by saying that hopefully the Raiders will stay in the Bay Area. However, that seems very unlikely given NFL owners voted 31-1 in March to relocate the team to Las Vegas by '20. He added that one issue to explore is whether Oakland should keep the Raiders' team name and colors, the way Cleveland kept the Browns' name after that team relocated to Baltimore and became the Ravens. Quinn previously served as lead counsel in the successful '80s antitrust challenge to the NFL’s player restrictions that led to free agency.
