IOC To Launch Digital Olympic Channel After Rio Games Conclude

The IOC will launch the long-awaited digital Olympic Channel as a single website and mobile app after the Rio Games conclude on Aug. 21, the body announced today. It will also be available on new social media handles on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube. The channel will include live sporting events through deals with international sports bodies and original feature content created by their own production teams. Free to all viewers, the channel was conceived as a way to expand marketing opportunities for sponsors.

Much of its structure remains a work in progress, an IOC exec said. The organization hopes to eventually launch localized versions by country and regions, and is in talks to include the app on smart TV systems, said IOC Managing Dir of TV & Marketing Services Timo Lumme. Delivering the channel on linear cable networks is still a long-term possibility, he said. The site is olympichannel.com, and the app will be available for Android and iOS platforms.
