MLBAM Partners With NextVR For Production Of Home Run Derby

MLBAM and virtual reality outfit NextVR have struck a deal to show tonight’s Home Run Derby in the enhanced format. The production will be available at NextVR’s MLB channel roughly 15 minutes after the conclusion of the Derby, and will feature both field-level cameras from Petco Park and an outfield camera for fan reaction shots. The VR production for the Derby will also feature commentary from MLB.com statistical analyst Mike Petriello. The efforts around this year’s Derby expand upon another initiative from league sponsor T-Mobile to offer a VR fan experience at FanFest and T-Mobile stores using content from last year’s Derby.

In addition, MLBAM will again expand its social media efforts for the Derby, aiding players with various on-field posts. Of particular focus this year is helping players create custom and All-Star-themed content for photo and video-focused platforms such as Instagram and Snapchat. T-Mobile, meanwhile, is creating for its customers a virtual “Social Lounge” that will collate content from MLB’s accounts on Twitter, Facebook Live and Periscope and will be hosted by Cubs CF Dexter Fowler.
