Baron Davis' Drew League Film Set To Premiere On Showtime

Showtime on Friday night debuts the new documentary "The Drew: No Excuse, Just Produce," which was directed and produced by former NBAer Baron Davis. The film explores L.A.'s Drew League basketball organization, and Davis "learned all about the unglamorous side" of moviemaking on the project. Davis: "It's a lot of hours. It's a lot of monotonous sitting and watching the same thing over and over" (ESPN.com, 4/29). Davis' next planned project is a "coming-of-age basketball movie combining elements of 'He Got Game' and 'Menace II Society'" (COMPLEX.com, 4/29).

WALL STREET JOURNAL: "Davis is a better basketball player than filmmaker." The documentary "pursues its league-as-oasis theme without a real gameplan." BLEACHER REPORT notes the film "isn't a basketball story so much as an informative tale about the positive influence local institutions can have on their compromised population."
