Yankees Shift More Early Games To YES To Pressure Comcast

The Yankees will have significantly fewer games on non-YES Network channels during April and May as a result of an ongoing carriage dispute with Comcast. There will be five total over-the-air games during April and May on WPIX-CW, down from eight during the start of last season. The first WPIX Yankees game this year will be on April 30 against the Red Sox. The first such game last year was on April 10, the fourth game of the season.

The Yankees overall will have nine games viewable outside YES Network between WPIX and ESPN during April and May this year, down from 15 in the same time period in '15. The Yankees are not scheduled to appear on Fox or FS1 nationally until June 4. YES Network itself has not yet released its '16 Yankees broadcast schedule, but industry sources said the RSN will have 128 regular-season games, similar to last year.

The marked front-loading of the YES Network portion of the broadcast schedule is aimed at putting more pressure on Comcast, which in November dropped the channel to more than 900,000 subscribers in New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. The RSN, meanwhile, has installed a large advertising takeover in the Port Authority Bus Terminal in midtown Manhattan, representing a key extension of YES Network’s ongoing campaign urging Comcast subscribers to switch from the carrier.
