NFL Reports Year-Over-Year Increase In Concussions In '15

The NFL on Friday reported that incidences of reported concussions totaled 271 for the '15 regular season and preseason, up from 206 in '14. That includes 182 reported concussions from regular-season games, a 58% increase from last year. NFL Senior VP/Health & Safety Policy Jeff Miller said the league is trying to determine why there is an increase, but said more screenings and players self-reporting could be factors. 49ers co-Chair John York, Chair of the NFL owners committee on health and safety, in part attributed the increase to “positive culture changes” among players leading to more self-reporting.

Nancy Dreyer, the Global Chief of Scientific Affairs & Senior VP of Quintiles, the league’s medical data provider, said it is likely that the increase came from added screenings and medical oversight in '15 than '14.
