NFL, Union Seeking Expedited Court Schedule For Brady Case

The NFL and NFLPA on Friday asked a N.Y. federal court judge to create an expedited court schedule so they can resolve the dispute over Tom Brady’s suspension by Sept. 4, a week before the Sept. 10 start of the NFL season. The NFLPA had been expected to file an injunction motion in Judge Richard Berman’s Manhattan federal court Friday, seeking to stay Brady’s four-game suspension. “The parties met and conferred and have agreed that a final resolution of this matter prior to the commencement of the 2015 regular season would be in everyone’s best interest,” NFLPA outside counsel Jeffrey Kessler wrote in a letter filed with the court Friday afternoon.

Kessler added Brady would be filing his lawsuit against the NFL later Friday. That lawsuit was already filed in a Minnesota federal court, but the assigned judge ruled jurisdiction belonged in Manhattan. Berman would have to agree to the schedule, which is very quick for a federal court. Were he to turn it down, the NFLPA would then presumably proceed to file an injunction. With an injunction, a judge could grant it, allowing Brady to play while the case proceeded. However, then Brady could still lose the case, and serve his suspension later in the season.
