IOC Convenes In Malaysia For Vote On '22 Games Host City

Hosting duty for the '22 Games hangs in the balance as the IOC meets in Kuala Lumpur shortly before 9:00am local time Friday morning (9:00pm ET Thursday). Almaty, Kazakhstan, and Beijing will make their final cases to the IOC in separate presentations set to begin at 10:30am. A vote will follow at 4:15pm, with results expected to be announced at 5:30pm. Some observers reported frantic, last-minute lobbying by both sides this afternoon.

The vote poses a question for the IOC, forcing them to choose between two very different bids. Almaty’s bid is widely seen as technically superior, with almost all proposed venues within 18 miles of each other and nearly 70% of venues already built. It also has plentiful snow. Beijing would locate its mountain events in Yanqing and Zhangjiakou, 40 and 90 miles away, respectively, which requires a high-speed rail line to be built. The city also would have a weather challenge, relying on artificial snow in many cases.

Beijing is considered the favorite due to the IOC’s experience with the '08 Games. The vote will culminate a tumultuous, seven-year campaign for the Games, which was marred by European cities such as Munich, Krakow, Oslo and St. Mortiz abandoning bids due to local opposition.
